PS1 Games made in C

The vast majority of commercial PlayStation games were developed in C, a programming language created in 1972 by Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs as an evolution of the earlier B programming language. By the 1990s, C had become de facto standard high-level language for game development thanks to its excellent performance, portability, and ability to generate highly efficient machine code

These qualities made it an ideal choice for the original PlayStation's hardware, allowing developers to write fast and optimized code while retaining more flexibility than pure assembly language. Sony's official PlayStation SDK was designed primarily for C development, making it easy for studios already familiar with the language to adopt the new console.

This tradition has continued within the homebrew community, where most SDKs (including the official PSY-Q SDK, PSn00bSDK, and other alternatives) use C as their primary programming language.

Below is a list of PlayStation homebrew projects developed entirely, or primarily, in C.

C isn't the only language available for PlayStation development. Explore our dedicated pages to learn how C++ and Rust are also used to create PS1 homebrew games.
