Humanbrew: A New AI-Free Community for Homebrew Developers

Video games are a form of human expression. Video games combine writing, music composition, visual art, programming, and many other disciplines, bringing them together to create interactive experiences. In recent years, AI is increasingly being used to speed up development processes in many areas, including video games, and this is causing some reservations amongst users.

Although we haven't published the results of our survey on AI use in the PS1 homebrew community yet, we can already share one preliminary observation: there is considerable dissatisfaction and pessimism within the community regarding the use of AI.

A new paradigm

It's undeniable that more and more projects are being developed with AI assistance, and this has generated strong opposition within parts of the community for several reasons. These include the ethics of AI training, the impact on the creative process, the importance of learning directly from original documentation, and the potential loss of knowledge-sharing and collaborative problem-solving within the community.

Homebrew communities across different platforms are also seeing projects created with varying degrees of AI assistance. Few communities establish strict limits on its use, but the PSX.dev Discord server is one place where AI-assisted development is permitted.

This has caused frustration among some members of the community. The well-known homebrew developer Elias Daler, who has repeatedly criticized the use of AI, expressed his concerns as follows:

PSXdev Discord server now pretty much forbids being anti-AI and discussing AI slop in a negative light. 🚬🚬🚬
We need more anti-AI spaces.
Maybe homebrew/decomp etc. devs from different platforms can unite against slop...

Daler argues that the rules and moderation of the PSX.dev Discord server make it difficult to express anti-AI opinions and criticize AI-generated content. He also calls for developers from different platforms to come together and create alternative spaces. That idea would soon lead to a new initiative announced on October 28.

Humanbrew, a community by Humans for Humans

That same day, Daler announced the idea of creating a Discord server for developers working across different platforms. He introduced the name and the philosophy behind the project as follows:

style="text-align: justify;">It will be called "Humanbrew"
(I came up with the name, hehe).
It will be about programming by humans for humans.
No AI apologia. No slop.
Actual human art, passion for learning, pursuit of knowledge, and the coolest projects, made with heart and soul.

Just hours after the initial announcement on October 28, Humanbrew was officially released as a new Discord community built around two main principles: creating, learning about, and sharing homebrew projects for different consoles, and imposing strict restrictions on the use of AI.

In less than a day, the server had already surpassed 500 members. Its channels cover several platforms, including the original PlayStation.

The founders are a group of developers from the homebrew scene. Among them are Elias Daler and spicyjpeg, both well-known figures in the PS1 homebrew community with notable projects associated with their work (we have entries of Project MTP, Yume Nikki PS1, and Serial Experiments Lain PS1 3D).

Spicyjpeg explains the purpose of the server as follows:

This place was born out of disagreement with the staff of several homebrew communities on how to handle the recent influx of vibe coded projects in these niches. We intend to be complementary to those communities rather than replacing them, and we encourage everyone to join or stay in the communities that decided to be tolerant of AI unless they have personal reasons not to.

Spicyjpeg also makes it clear that projects shared in the server must not use AI:

Projects posted in this server should be clean of any AI use. [...] Use of AI imagery, 3D models, music and other "art", even as a placeholder, is forbidden under any circumstance. Not only is AI "art" repulsive, but this server is for artists too and they'd rather not be reminded of what their field is now like.

Beyond the introductory, rules, and suggestions channels, the server is organized into two main divisions:

  • 2D consoles: NES, SNES, Mega Drive, and Neo Geo.
  • 3D consoles: At the time of writing, this section was not yet visible. We expect it to include systems such as the PS1, Saturn, 3DO, and Dreamcast, although the final selection of platforms remains to be confirmed.

Each section is dedicated to a specific console, allowing developers to discuss their projects and share knowledge with others working on the same hardware.

Our Stance

Here at PSX Homebrew Games, we want to express our gratitude and full support for this initiative. We believe that any space encouraging creativity and community participation is a welcome addition to the homebrew scene.

For this reason, we intend to recommend Humanbrew as a valuable meeting place for developers who want to share their projects, learn from others, and connect with the wider homebrew community.

Please join this Discord community here.

We will also be publishing the results of our survey on AI use in homebrew projects soon. We have already received 80 responses, but we would like to gather a few more before analyzing the results and publishing our findings.

We encourage you to participate in the survey if you haven't done so already. Your response will help us better understand the community's views on AI in PS1 homebrew development.

  • Consolas 2D: Nes, Snes, Mega Drive, Neo Geo.
