The Making of Nortis — Interview with Jimmy Breck-McKye

As part of Flappy Week, we continue bringing you new exclusives day after day. Throughout the event, we have already showcased several projects, including Flappy Adventure X, Flappy Adventure 3, and Nortis. We also launched a series of community challenges to encourage readers to play the games and compete with each other.

On top of that, we published our first-ever developer interview (Part 1 - Part 2) on the website featuring Juanmv94, creator of the Flappy Adventure series. Since the interview was originally conducted in Spanish, it also became our first article published in Spanish, which led us to launch a new initiative allowing community members to help translate any article on the site into other languages.

Another major addition during the event has been the creation of the new Leaderboards page, where we will be uploading players’ high scores for selected games featured on the website. At the moment, the first supported title is Nortis, but we plan to expand this system with many more games in the future.

Even after all of this activity, Flappy Week is far from over. Today, we are proud to present our second developer interview. This time, we had the opportunity to talk with the developer behind Nortis, one of the most interesting recent PS1 homebrew releases. We would like to sincerely thank him for taking the time to participate, and we hope you enjoy reading the interview as much as we enjoyed preparing it.

As always, all of these efforts exist for one reason: to continue growing the PS1 homebrew community, showcase the passion still surrounding the original PlayStation, and most importantly, help keep the spirit of the PS1 alive forever.

 

Interview with Jimmy Breck-McKye,  the developer of Nortis

- What connection do you personally have with the original PlayStation? Would you say it’s your favorite console? And do you have a favorite PS1 game?

The PSX was my first console. Back in 95 we visited a family friend who was showing us the original Tomb Raider. We were mesmerized - we'd never seen anything like it. It looked like there was a whole 3D world you could explore inside a game.

When I finally got my hands on my own console, the first game I played was Crash Bandicoot - which remains very dear to my heart.

 

- How did your interest in PS1 homebrew development begin?

I was browsing eBay for PlayStation paraphernalia and found a Yaroze shipping in my own country. As an impulse I decided to buy it.

After a few weeks admiring it on my shelf, I began to wonder, what would it be like to actually write PlayStation games? I was already a software engineer professionally so there was an appeal in exploring a different era of software development, to see how close it aligned with modern programming.

 

- In the GitHub page for the project, you mentioned that getting a Net Yaroze inspired this whole journey. What was it like owning such a special piece of PlayStation history for the first time?

Initially I was terrified that I'd be disappointed by it, that I would have just blown a bunch of money on something useless.

Actually it was worth every penny. It feels like owning a relationship to a bygone era.

 

- What inspired you to create Nortis specifically?

So when I decided I was writing a PlayStation game I wanted to boil down the project to the absolute essentials.

Tackling any hard project is largely a matter of breaking it down into feasible chunks. A Tetris clone was the simplest thing I could think of that was still a "real" game, and give me a taste of PSX development.

 

- What was the most challenging part of developing Nortis on the original PlayStation hardware?

Actually burning the discs!

Most people don't realise this but CD-ROMs are not really interchangeable. The PSX laser is not very strong and it needs discs with high reflectivity - burned CDs have lower reflection and depending on the material can be only a fraction as visible to the PlayStation's drive.

I had to hunt down some Taiyo Yuden CD-R stock, tip the machine on its side, and even then it only just wanted to boot!

- Did the final game turn out close to your original vision, or did the project evolve a lot during development?

I initially developed on PC with SDL and figured I could port the game directly to the PSX SDK.

One thing that had to change was randomisation. On PC you can seed the RNG from a clock whereas on PSX, generally you can't use that for pseudo-randomisation.

That's why you need the start screen, so the player effectively picks the random seed, and is actually why many old games had start screens.

 

- Was there any feature or idea that had to be cut from the game?

It would have been nice to add some sound, but, I'm not very good at audio programming.

 

- What do you think makes developing for the PS1 special compared to modern platforms?

The PSX has really high graphical throughput but not much memory. You can eke a lot out of it if you focus on what the console is good at.

That's how games like Crash Bandicoot made the most of the system: all the graphics calculations are pre-baked onto the disc, these are then streamed off and effectively piped onto the GPU. Meanwhile the dynamic part of the game remains simple.

For Nortis, the main difference was just learning C. I was a little intimidated coming from higher level languages, but, honestly C is actually quite fun to use.

 

- Was there a specific moment during development where you felt: “Okay, this is becoming a real PlayStation game”?

Because I was able to prototype on PC, once I had the graphics code working on PSX, it was largely a matter of just porting the code and within ten minutes I had something that resembled 80% of a playable game.

That was nice. I had tried to keep the core of the prototype code very portable and that investment paid off.

 

- How did it feel seeing Nortis successfully boot on real PlayStation hardware for the first time?

It's incredible. You can finally say you made a PlayStation game. It was the highlight of my year, way better than any holiday.

 

- Do you have any future plans or ideas for new PS1 projects?

I have a few ideas.

One thing I'm interested in is games with pre-rendered backgrounds. These were really popular for the PSX due to its powerful MDEC decoder, but the genre has largely died out.

They have a look that's very special, not quite realistic, more like 90s CGI. I'm thinking something like Resident Evil or Parasite Eve.

 

- Is there anything you would like to say to the people discovering your work through the PS1 homebrew community?

I think the lesson is, if you want to try it, try it!

There are more tools than ever before. Some people want to shortcut the discovery process by using AI, which I think is a bit of a shame.

The fun is going from simple C code or assembly and actually having a full working game - just like the developers of our favourite titles. You can't beat it.

Entrevista con Jimmy Breck-McKye,  desarrollador de Nortis

- ¿Qué conexión tienes personalmente con la PlayStation original? ¿Dirías que es tu consola favorita? ¿Tienes algún juego favorito?

La PSX fue mi primera consola. Allá en el 95, visitamos la familia de un amigo que estaba enseñándonos el Tomb Raider original. Nos quedamos hipnotizados. Nunca vimos nada como aquel juego. Parecía como si hubiera todo un mundo entero por explorar dentro de un disco.

Cuando tuve por primera vez en mis manos la consola, el primer juego que probé fue el Crash Bandicoot, el cual sigue presente en lo más profundo de mi corazón.

 

- ¿Cómo empezaste a cobrar interés por el desarrollo homebrew en la PS1?

Estaba buscando por eBay cosas para la PlayStation y encontré la Yaroze para mi país. Lo decidí comprar por impulso.

Después de varias semanas admirándola en mi estantería empecé a pensar: ¿Cómo sería programar de verdad juegos para la PlayStation? Yo ya era ingeniero de software profesionalmente, por lo que tenía de base cierta atracción en explorar otro tipo de desarrollo de software antiguo, sobre todo, me hacía especial ilusión comprobar lo parecido que hubiera en comparación con el desarrollo moderno.

 

- En la página del proyecto en Github mencionas que conseguir una Net Yaroze te inspiró toda la travesía. ¿Qué se sentía al tener por primera vez una pieza tan especial para la historia de la PS1?

Pues inicialmente estaba aterrorizado de lo decepcionado que estaba con ella, llegué a pensar en la cantidad de dinero que había tirado por algo inútil.

En realidad, mereció cada centavo. Es como tener una conexión directa con una era pasada.

 

- ¿Qué te inspiró a crear Nortis exactamente?

Pues cuando decidí en programar un juego para la PlayStation pensé en hacer un juego que cubriera los aspectos más esenciales para la consola.

Abordar cualquier proyecto complicado se resume en trocearlo en la mayor cantidad de partes posibles. Un clon del Tetris era la cosa más simple en la que podía pensar que fuera un juego "real" y que me diera esa sensación de desarrollo de PS1 retro.

 

- ¿Qué fue la parte más retante al desarrollar Nortis en la PlayStation original?

¡Realmente quemar los juegos en CD!

La gente no lo piensa, pero los CD-ROMS no son intercambiables. El laser de la PS1 no es muy bueno y necesita de discos de alta reflectabilidad. Los discos que compras tienen menor reflectabilidad y dependiendo del material solo una parte es reconocida por el lector de la PS1.

Tuve que encontrar algo de stock de CD-R de la marca Taiyo Yuden CD-R, poner la consola de manera vertical y, con todo esto, a duras penas hacía que los juegos arrancaran!

- ¿El resultado final era lo que tenías pensado o el proyecto fue evolucionando durante el desarollo?

Al principio lo desarrollé em PC con SDL y me di cuenta de que podía portearlo directamente al SDK de PSX.

Algo que tuve que cambiar fue la aleatoriedad. En PC puedes inicializar el RNG con el reloj del sistema, mientras que en PSX, por lo general, no puedes usar eso para la pseudo-aleatoriedad.

Por eso mismo necesitas un menú de inicio. De esta forma el jugador obtiene una semilla aleatoria y por eso muchos juegos antiguos tienen un menú de inicio.

 

- ¿Hubo alguna mecánica o idea que tuviera que eliminarse del juego?

Hubiera estado genial añadir algo de sonido pero, no soy muy bueno programando el audio.

 

- ¿Qué crees que hace el desarrollar en PS1 algo especial en comparación con otras plataformas?

La PSX tiene mucha potencia gráfica pero no mucha memoria. Tú puedes hacer mucho si te centras en lo que la consola es capaz de hacer mejor.

Por eso juegos como Crash Bandicoot hicieron lo imposible con el sistema. Todos los cálculos gráficos estaban hechos ya dentro del disco y eran cargados en el momento y enviados directamente a la GPU. Mientras, la parte más dinámica se mantiene de la manera más simple posible.

Para Nortis, la gran diferencia fue aprender C. Estaba un poco intimidado viniendo de lenguajes de alto nivel pero, realmente, C es muy divertido de usar.

 

- ¿Hubo algún momento durante el desarrollo que sintieras:“Okay, esto se siente ya como un juego de PS1 de verdad”?

Como era capaz de trastear desde la PC, una vez que pude hacer que los gráficos funcionaran en la PSX, fue cuestión de portear el código y en unos 10 minutos ya tenía un 80% de un proyecto que era ya jugable.

Eso fue genial. Intenté que el núcleo del código del prototipo fuera portable y ese esfuerzo valió la pena.

 

- ¿Cómo te sentiste al ver tu juego arrancar exitósamente en una PS1 real por primera vez?

Fue increible. Puedes decir que por fin hiciste un juego para la PlayStation. Fue el evento más importante de mi año, muchísimo más satisfactorio que cualquier festividad.

 

- ¿Tienes planes o ideas para nuevos proyectos para la PS1?

Tengo algunas ideas.

Una de ellas es que tengo especial interés por los juegos con fondos pre-renderizados. Estos fueron muy populares porque la PSX tenía un codificador MDEC muy capaz, pero es un género que ha muerto prácticamente.

Estos juegos tenían un estilo muy especial, no era muy realista, como era todo el CGI en los 90. Sigo pensando en algo como Resident Evil o Parasite Eve.

 

- ¿Hay algo que te gustaría decir a la gente de la comunidad homebrew de la PS1 que está disfrutando de tu proyecto?

Pienso que hay una lección importante y es: si hay algo que quieras intentar, ¡Inténtalo!

Ahora hay muchas más herramientas que antes. Algunas personas quieres atajar el camino utilizando la IA, al que pienso que es una verdadera pena.

Lo más divertido es hacer cosas sencillas con C o ensamblador y termibar haciendo un juego completo totalmente funcional (tal cual como hacían los desarrolladores de tus títulos favoritos). Es algo insuperable.

Interview with Juanmv94 - Inside the Technical Side of Flappy Adventure

After learning more about the origins of Flappy Adventure and Juanmv94’s connection with the PlayStation scene in the first part of the interview, it is now time to dive into the technical side of the projects.

In this second part, we discuss the development process behind Flappy Adventure X and Flappy Adventure 3, tools and engines, the challenges of programming for PS1 hardware, level design, and the current state of the PS1 homebrew scene.

From collision systems and 3D rendering to memory limitations and low-level programming, this part of the interview offers a much deeper look into what it actually takes to develop modern homebrew games for the original PlayStation.

 

Part 2 - Inside the Technical Side of Flappy Adventure

- I understand that FADVX was your first PS1 project. Before that game, had you already experimented with the PS1 or did you jump straight into developing FADVX? What was the first thing you managed to get working in the game?

Before starting Flappy Adventure X, I first had to learn the basics of PS1 programming, so I created several very small demos (3D rendering, video playback, XA music and samples, memory card support, analog controls, etc.), although nothing particularly notable from a gameplay perspective.

The first thing I got working in FADVX was rendering the level layout (without dynamic objects yet), along with the basic jumping mechanics and floor collision. Later I added scrolling backgrounds, wall collision, and the flap mechanic (jumping with forward movement). After that came coins, camera controls, and different terrain types, including ice. Sound, CD support, dynamic objects, and the rest came much later.

 

- What tools did you use? SDKs? Did you create any software to help with development?

I used SONY’s official C compiler: PSYQ, as well as other official tools such as TIM Tool, Movie Converter and VAG Editor. I also created my own tool to convert 3D models made in SketchUp into the .FEO and .FEW formats used by the Flappy Engine 3 engine.

For Flappy Adventure X I also developed a level editor. For Flappy Adventure 3, it was no longer necessary.

 

- Which level is your favourite or the one you enjoyed creating the most (FADV3)?

The Feria de Albacete level, because it represents the area where I come from very well, and people from my region are always amazed to see something so familiar running on a PS1.

 

- And in FADVX?

This time, although I also made a time-trial level based on the Albacete fair that I really liked, I would choose the low-gravity level. Playing it requires calculating every jump carefully so you don’t overshoot or fall short, and that’s exactly what made the game fun without becoming excessively difficult.

 

- FADVX is a very difficult game. What criteria did you follow when designing the levels? Or in other words, what made you feel that a section was well designed?

For me, a level being difficult and/or forcing you to think was synonymous with good design. I didn’t want to make an easy and boring game. And maybe I went a little too far…

 

- What was the most difficult thing to program? Were there any bugs that were especially hard to fix?

The 3D engine and the collision system were by far the hardest parts, because I couldn’t find any decent examples for either of them and had to build everything completely from scratch.I needed a 3D engine capable of handling lighting, fog effects, and dividing levels into chunks, since the PS1 obviously cannot render an entire scenario at once.

For the collision system, I had to revisit mathematics books and study vectors, planes, and related concepts, while also researching how to take advantage of the PlayStation’s GTE mathematical co-processor to apply some of these calculations.

The thing that cost me the most effort was achieving decent performance with my new engine, Flappy Engine 3. While commercial PS1 games were often heavily optimised in assembly language to fully exploit the hardware, I wanted to keep the engine entirely written in C without making development excessively complicated.

 

- Was there any mechanic that initially seemed like a good idea but that you eventually had to remove during development?

Not really. The mechanics were already very clear from the beginning and were meant to be a continuation of Flappy Adventure 1. At one point I considered giving Flappy some sort of “attack,” but I never actually developed the idea. 

- Artistically, the game looks very clean and attractive. Do you think it could be improved visually without sacrificing performance, or do you think this is close to the console’s limit?

My original idea for Flappy Adventure 3 was a 3D PC game with cel shading and a fun, cartoon-like visual style.

When I decided to move development to the PS1, I discarded the cel shading idea but kept the bright colours and minimal texture approach. Adding more textures or a wider colour variety would not really have affected performance.

Polygon count, however, has a major impact. Although AAA PS1 games such as Spyro pushed the hardware much further thanks to heavy low-level optimisation, I did not want to go that far.

 

- The minigames featured in some levels are really fun. I was especially surprised by the Tetris-style one. Which of them (Arkanoid, Tetris, or Space Invaders) was the hardest to create? Was there any other minigame idea you wanted to include?

If I remember correctly, the Space Invaders one had the most complex logic of the three. Fortunately I didn’t leave behind any discarded ideas and I managed to include every minigame I had planned, along with the rest of the puzzles featured throughout the levels.

 

 
- What was the biggest hardware limitation during development?

CPU speed is a major limitation when trying to maintain a stable framerate that never drops below 30 FPS.

The PS1’s 2MB of RAM are also very restrictive. Having more memory would have allowed me to create larger scenarios and optimise the chunk system much further, which would have resulted in better performance overall.

 

- What aspect of the project do you think people underestimate the most regarding its difficulty?

 Creating a game for PS1 is much more difficult than creating one in engines such as Unity.

You work in low-level C, you need to understand the PS1 hardware and the library functions, and if necessary, you must also create your own 3D engine and collision systems, things that modern engines already provide by default.

 

- If you could remake FADVX today with your current experience, what would you change?

Probably the visuals. I would design the level layouts as proper 3D models with depth and detail, where every area of the stage, including the ground and obstacles, looked visually distinct instead of relying on simple square blocks with identical appearances (something more similar to the PS1 Tarzan game), even if behind the scenes I still used the same editor for floor and wall collision.

 

- Do you plan to create more games in this saga or different projects for PS1?

I always considered Flappy Adventure 3 to be the last game I would develop, mainly because I’m now over 30 years old and should probably focus on other aspects of life.

However, programming is something I genuinely enjoy, so I cannot say with certainty that this decision is definitive.

- Which current PS1 homebrew developer or project impresses you the most?

The project that impressed me the most is NATP by GoldenAgeTurbo, although I have barely found any information about it and I’m not sure about its current state of development.

I have also been very impressed by Elias Daler’s work on the PS1 projects he has been developing using his own custom engine.

 

- What advice would you give to someone interested in developing for PS1?

Have programming experience first, and if possible, use an already existing engine such as SplashEdit, although I personally have not used it.

 

- Is there anything else you would like to share with the community?

Parte 2 - Dentro del lado técnico de Flappy Adventure

- Entiendo que FADVX fue tu primer proyecto en PS1. Antes de ese juego, ¿ya habías experimentado con la PS1 o empezaste directamente desarrollando FADVX? ¿Qué fue lo primero que lograste hacer funcionar en el juego?

Antes de empezar a desarrollar Flappy Adventure X tuve que empezar aprendiendo las bases de programación en PS1, por lo que me hice algunas pequeñas demos muy simples (renderizado 3D, reproduccion de video, reproducción de samples y música XA, memory card, controles analógicos, ...) pero nada destacable desde el punto de vista "jugable".

Lo primero que hice funcionar en FADVX fue renderizar el layout de nivel (sin objetos dinámicos aun) y las mecánicas básicas de salto, y colisión con el suelo. Posteriormente añadí los backgrounds scrolleables, colision con paredes, y mecanica de flap (salto con avance). Más adelante añadí las monedas, la posibilidad de subir y bajar la cámara, y los distintos tipos de terreno, incluyendo el hielo. El sonido, soporte para CD, objetos dinamicos,... vendría todo más adelante.

 

- ¿Qué herramientas utilizaste? ¿SDK? ¿Llegaste a hacer software propio para ayudarte en el desarrollo?

Utilicé el compilador oficial de SONY: PSYQ Así como otras herramientas oficiales como TIM Tool, Movie Converter y VAG Editor,... Cree mi propia herramienta para transformar modelos 3D creados en SketchUp al formato del motor Flappy Engine 3 .FEO y .FEW.

Para Flappy Adventure X también hice un editor de niveles. Para Flappy Adventure 3 no me hizo falta.

 

- ¿Cuál es tu nivel favorito o el que más has disfrutado hacer en FADV3?

El nivel de la Feria de Albacete, ya que es muy representativo de la zona de donde vengo, y la gente de mi zona flipa al verlo funcionar en una PS1.

 

- ¿Y en FADVX?

En esta ocasión, aunque también hice un nivel contrarreloj basado en la feria de Albacete que me gustó mucho, me quedo con el nivel de gravedad baja, ya que jugarlo supone calcular cada salto para no pasarte o quedarte corto, y eso es justamente lo que hacía divertido el juego y sin llegar a ser demasiado difícil.

 

- La dificultad del FAX es alta. ¿Qué criterios utilizastes para diseñar los niveles? O dicho de otra forma, ¿Qué hacía que consideraras que una sección estaba bien hecha?

Para mi que un nivel fuese dificil y/o te hiciera pensar era sinónimo de que el nivel estaba bien diseñado. No quería un juego fácil y aburrido. Y puede que me pasase un poco...

 

- ¿Qué fue lo más difícil de programar? ¿Hubo bugs que te costaron solucionar?

El motor 3D y la colisión, puesto que no encontré ejemplos decentes para estas dos cosas y tuve que hacerlo todo desde 0. Yo necesitaba un motor 3D que manejase bien la iluminación, el efecto niebla, y dividiera los niveles en "chunks" ya que obviamente la PS1 no tiene capacidad para renderizar todo el escenario completo a la vez.

Para la colisión tuve que sacar los libros de matemáticas y documentarme sobre vectores, planos,... e investigar como podía aprovechar el co-procesador matemático GTE de la PlayStation para aplicar algunas de estas formulas.

Lo que más me costó es conseguir que mi nuevo motor "Flappy Engine 3" tuviera una performance decente, puesto que mientras los juegos triple A de PS1 suelen estar optimizados a nivel de ensamblador para exprimir al máximo la consola, yo no quería complicarme tanto y quería tenerlo puramente en C.

 

- ¿Hubo alguna mecánica que inicialmente parecía buena idea pero tuviste que eliminar durante el desarrollo?

Realmente no, las mecánicas ya estaban claras desde el principio e iban a ser una copia de Flappy Adventure 1. Si que me plantee en alguna ocasión dotar a Flappy de algun "ataque" pero nunca desarrollé la idea.

- A nivel artístico se ve muy limpio y atractivo. ¿Crees que se podría mejorar visualmente sin perder rendimiento o crees que es el límite de la consola?

Mi idea original de Flappy Adventure 3 era de un juego de PC en 3D con Cel Shading y aspecto divertido y caricaturesco. Cuando opté por desarrollarlo para PS1, descarté la idea del Cel Shading pero mantuve la idea de colores vivos y poquitas texturas. Haber añadido más texturas y una variedad mayor de colores no habría afectado para nada al performance.

La cantidad de polígonos no obstante, si afecta y bastante, y es que aunque juegos triple A como Spyro exprimen mucho más las capacidades técnicas de la consola al estar optimizados incluso a nivel de ensamblador, yo no quería llegar a tanto.

- Los minijuegos que hay en algunos niveles son muy divertidos. Me sorprendió muchísimo el que es tipo Tetris. ¿Cuál de estos (el Arkanoid, Tetris o Space Invaders) es el que más te costó hacer? ¿Tenías alguno en mente que te hubiera gustado hacer?

Si no recuerdo mal, el de Space-Invaders fue el que tenía la lógica mas compleja de los 3. Por suerte no me deje ninguna idea descartada e hice todos los minijuegos que tenía en mente, aparte del resto de puzzles de los demás niveles.

 

 
- ¿Cuál fue la mayor limitación por hardware a la hora de hacer el proyecto?

La velocidad de la CPU limita bastante a la hora de optimizar el juego para que funcione a un framerate estable y no baje nunca de 30fps.

Las 2MB de RAM también van un poquito justas, y haber dispuesto de más memoria me habría permitido crear escenarios mucho más grandes y optimizar los chunks del escenario, lo que habría supuesto un mayor rendimiento.

 

- ¿Qué aspecto del proyecto crees que la gente pasa por alto o no valora tanto en relación a la dificultad de implementar?

Crear un juego para PS1 es mucho más complejo que crear un juego con Unity, por ejemplo. Se programa en C a bajo nivel, tienes que conocer el hardware de la PS1, las funciones de las librerías, y en caso de necesitarlo tienes que crear el motor 3D y de colisiones que otros SDK como Unity ya te dan creado.

 

- ¿Tienes pensado hacer algún título más de esta saga u otro diferente para la PS1?

Siempre tuve en mente que FADV3 sería el último juego que desarrollaría, puesto que ya pasé de los 30 años y debo centrarme en otros aspectos de la vida. Pero programar es algo que me gusta y no puedo asegurar que sea una decisión definitiva.

 

- ¿Qué desarrollador o proyecto homebrew actual para PS1 te impresiona más?

El que más me ha impresionado de los que visto es NATP de GoldenAgeTurbo, aunque apenas he encontrado información sobre él y no se en que estado estará su desarrollo actualmente.

También me ha impresionado mucho el trabajo de Elias Daler en dos juegos en los que ha estado trabajando para PS1 tras crearse él también su propio motor.

- ¿Qué consejo darías a alguien que quiere empezar a desarrollar para PS1?

Tener experiencia programando, y si fuera posible utilizar algún motor ya existente (como SplashEdit, aunque no lo he probado).

- ¿Hay algo más que te gustaría compartir con la comunidad?

Interview with Juanmv94 — Origins of Flappy Adventure

For this special occasion, we are proud to bring the very first interview with a PS1 homebrew developer to this website.

Over the years, the PlayStation homebrew scene has continued to grow with increasingly ambitious and technically impressive projects developed by passionate creators from around the world. Games showcased on Flappy Week, like Flappy Adventure X, Flappy Adventure 3 or Nortis, are proof that the community surrounding the original PlayStation is still alive, evolving, and full of creativity.

This time, we had the opportunity to speak with Juanmv94, developer of Flappy Adventure X and Flappy Adventure 3. This games are two highly enjoyable projects that not only deliver challenging gameplay, but also showcase the technical potential that can still be achieved on Sony’s first console decades later.

To make the interview easier to follow, we decided to divide it into two different parts. In the first half, we will get to know more about the developer himself, his connection with the PlayStation and the origins of the Flappy Adventure series. In the second half, we will dive deeper into the technical side of the projects, discussing development challenges, hardware limitations, tools, engines, and the process behind creating games for the PS1.

We hope this interview helps shine a light on both the creativity and dedication that continue to drive the PlayStation homebrew scene forward.

Part 1 -  Origins of Flappy Adventure

- What is your connection with the PS1? Which are your favourite titles? 

Although I never had the console growing up, I did play a lot of PC games from that era, including several PS1 titles. My favourites are Toy Story 2 by Traveller’s Tales (which I’ve done extensive reverse engineering on: Github), Rayman 2, and the Spyro series.

- What motivated you to start developing homebrew projects for the PS1?

I had already developed for other consoles like the Game Boy (original, Color, and Advance). At one point I was considering getting a flash cartridge for Game Boy to run my homebrew on real hardware. But a friend of mine surprised me by giving me his old chipped PS1, knowing it was a console I had always been interested in and one I could develop for.

 

- How did you learn to develop games for the console?

Mostly through trial and error, studying Sony’s official documentation (the Run-Time Library Reference), and analysing open-source examples from the PSXDEV forum.

 

 - You’ve worked on several Flappy Bird-related projects. Where does this passion for the yellow bird come from?

It all started by chance during my computer engineering studies. Although my professional focus was never game development, I experimented with programming games for the Game Boy. Instead of creating original concepts from scratch, I decided to recreate popular games of the time (Flappy Bird, 2048, etc.) on Game Boy.

Later, I started experimenting with creating my own platformer and initially planned to design an original character, but I ended up reusing the Flappy sprites. While experimenting with mechanics, I realised something: the “flap” mechanic in a 2D platforming environment had a lot of potential. That’s how Flappy Adventure was born.

From there came a web adaptation of the game while I was learning JavaScript, followed by a new 3D version using Three.js, where I kept Flappy as the main character but now in a first-person 3D environment: Flappy Adventure 2.

 

 

Years later, when I was gifted a PS1 and started developing for it, I decided to create a full game for the console. I chose my trusted platformer character once again, but this time as a 2D spin-off (with 3D graphics) and many more dynamic elements than its predecessors, which I called Flappy Adventure X (“X” as in PSX).

A few years later, after an old cancelled idea for Flappy Adventure 3 on PC had been sitting around for a long time, and seeing how little homebrew was being developed for PS1, I decided I had to bring it to PS1 as well, even if it was much more difficult than using something like Unity, and required building everything from scratch, including the engine. 

 

- Is this (FA3) your most proud project so far?

Flappy Adventure 3 is my most ambitious project to date, as I had to build everything from scratch and it is much more technically complex than its predecessor, Flappy Adventure X.

 

- What was the most satisfying moment while making FADVX?

Finishing it, uploading a full gameplay video, and realizing that the result was not just another simple homebrew minigame you complete in 10 minutes, but a full adventure that can take over an hour to finish, complete with cinematics, music, and everything else you would expect from an original PS1 title.

 

- I find the background images really curious. I imagine they’re photos taken by you. Is that correct? If so, is there any funny or interesting anecdote behind them?

The first photo was indeed taken by me and shows my hometown (Hellín) from a nearby mountain. The rest of the images were taken from the internet.

The only funny detail I can think of is the image in the final level, which is actually a screenshot from the Angry Birds movie where the birds are shocked by the arrival of the pigs. In this case, however, they are shocked by Flappy defeating Red.

 

- In both games we see Flappy interacting with the Angry Birds. I already asked you why Flappy became the protagonist of so many of your projects, but… why Angry Birds? What’s the lore behind the red bird being such a jerk to Flappy?

The Angry Birds first appeared in Flappy Adventure 1 on the web version. Back then there were a lot of memes comparing Flappy Bird with Angry Birds as if they were direct competitors (with Flappy obviously at a disadvantage), and even YouTube videos like the one that appears in the intro of FADVX.

Both in FADVX and FADV3 I wanted to include modern references inside a game for an old console, and Flappy’s “enemies” couldn’t be missing.

Parte 1 -  Los orígenes de Flappy Adventure

- ¿Qué conexión tienes con la PS1? ¿Te marcó la consola? ¿Cuáles son tus títulos favoritos? 

Aunque nunca tuve la consola de pequeño, si jugaba mucho a videojuegos de PC de la época, incluyendo títulos de PS1. Mis favoritos son Toy Story 2 de Travellers Tales (Al cual he hecho muchísima ingeniería inversa: Github), Rayman 2, y la saga Spyro.

- ¿Qué te motivó a empezar a desarrollar proyectos para la PS1?

Yo ya había desarrollado para otras consolas como la Game Boy (original, Color, y Advance), y me estaba planteando comprar un cartucho flash de GB para poder correr mi homebrew en hardware real, pero un amigo mio se me adelantó y me regaló su vieja PS1 con chip sabiendo que era una consola que siempre me había atraído y que podría desarrollar para ella.

 

- ¿Cómo aprendiste a hacer juegos para dicha consola?

Aprendí a base de prueba y error, estudiando la documentación oficial de Sony (Run-Time Library Reference), y analizando ejemplos de código abierto del foro PSXDEV.

 

 - Has hecho varios proyectos relacionados con Flappy Bird. ¿De dónde viene esa pasión por el pájaro amarillo?

Surgió todo de casualidad durante mi formación en ingeniería informática. Aunque mi foco profesional nunca ha sido el desarrollo de videojuegos, quise experimentar probando a programar juegos para Game Boy, y en lugar de crear una idea nueva desde 0, simplemente decidí implementar juegos de moda (Flappy Bird, 2048,...) en GameBoy.

Posteriormente me puse a experimentar en la creación de un plataformero propio para el que tenía en mente crear mi propio personaje, aunque al comenzar el desarrollo re-utilicé los sprites ya creados (Flappy)y experimentando con las mecánicas me di cuenta de una cosa... La mecánica de "flap" de Flappy en un entorno 2D en el que pudieras desplazarte tenía muchísimo juego. De ahí nació "Flappy Adventure".

De ahí vino una adaptación web del mismo juego mientras empezaba a aprender JavaScript, a la que siguió un nuevo juego esta vez en 3D con Three.js para la cual decidí seguir manteniendo a Flappy como protagonista con la misma mecanica de "flap" esta vez en un entorno 3D en primera persona: Flappy Adventure 2.

 

 

Años después, cuando me regalaron una PS1 y empecé a programar para ella, fue cuando decidí crear un juego completo para esta, y que mejor que mi plataformero de confianza. Aunque eso sí, un spinoff de mecánica 2D (Con graficos 3D) con muchos mas elementos dinámicos que sus predecesores a la que llamé "Flappy Adventure X" ("X" de PS"X").

Fue unos pocos años después, con una idea cancelada de un "Flappy Adventure 3" para PC arrastrando desde hace varios años, y viendo la poca cantidad de homebrew que se estaba desarrollando para PS1 que supe que debía hacerlo también para PS1, aunque fuese mucho más costoso que programar en Unity y que debía crearme el motor del juego y todo desde 0. 

 

- ¿Es el proyecto (FADV3) del que estás más orgulloso de haber realizado?

Flappy Adventure 3 es mi proyecto más ambicioso hasta el momento, puesto que tuve que hacer todo desde 0 y tiene mucha más complejidad técnica que su predecesor Flappy Adventure X.

 

- ¿Cuál fue el momento más satisfactorio al hacer FADVX?

Terminarlo, subir un gameplay completo, y confirmar que el resultado no se trata de un simple minijuego homebrew como otros ya existentes que te pasas en 10 minutos, sino de toda una aventura que te puede llevar incluso más de 1 hora jugarlo entero, con sus cinemáticas, su música,... como cualquier juego del catalogo original de PS1.

 

- Me parecen muy curiosas las imágenes de fondo. Me imagino que son fotos hechas por ti. ¿Eso es así? En tal caso, ¿Habría alguna anécdota curiosa entre ellas?

La primera foto tomada por mi es de mi pueblo (Hellín) tomada desde una montaña adyacente a este. El resto de fotos fueron obtenidas de Internet. La única curiosidad que se me ocurre es de la del último nivel que es un screenshot de la película "Angry Birds" con los pájaros sorprendidos ante la llegada de los cerdos, pero en este caso, están sorprendidos ante la victoria de Flappy frente a Red..

 

- En esta aventura vemos a Flappy con los Angry Birds. Te pregunté de por qué Flappy era el protagonista en tantas aventuras tuyas pero, ¿Y los Angry Birds? ¿Cuál es el lore para que el pájaro rojo sea tan cabroncete con Flappy?

Los Angry Birds aparecieron por primera vez en Flappy Adventure 1 en la versión web. Por entonces había muchos memes sobre Flappy Bird comparándolo con los Angry Birds como si fuesen su competencia directa (con una clarísima desventaja), e incluso videos en Youtube como el que aparece en la intro de FADVX.

Tanto en FADVX como FADV3 quería añadir elementos actuales a un juego para una consola antigua, y los "enemigos" de Flappy no podían faltar.
